This month, we are excited to introduce Dez, a new mom, wife, and the creative heart behind Doodles by Dez, a custom design business based in Blue Springs, Missouri. From vinyl decals and door wreaths to window paintings, banners, and digital designs, Dez brings a little sparkle and a lot of personality to every project. Juggling a full-time job, a 7-month-old, and a growing business, she is proof that passion and purpose can thrive even in the busiest seasons of life.
Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
Hi! I'm Dez! I'm a new mom to my 7-month-old son, Axle, and I recently celebrated my first wedding anniversary. This past year has been full of exciting changes! After becoming a mom, I spent a lot of time focused on caring for my new little human and, for a while, felt like I misplaced my creative spark somewhere between diaper changes and sleepless nights. Thankfully, I've started finding my way back to my creative groove.
A few fun facts about me: my favorite color is turquoise, I proudly have a King of the Hill tattoo, and if you suggest getting matching tattoos, there is a very real chance I will be asking what time we're leaving. I also have the memory skills of Dory from Finding Nemo, so if I forget what I was talking about halfway through a conversation, just know it's part of my charm! I'm excited to meet new people and make some great memories along the way, assuming I can remember them!

What inspired you to start your business?
I've been an artist for as long as I can remember, just ask my old homework assignments that were mostly doodles with a little math squeezed in. My high school art teacher, Jean Saymn, encouraged my creativity and probably saved me from getting in trouble more than once. These days, my biggest inspiration is my son. He reminds me every day why I'm chasing this dream, so I can be home for the giggles, the milestones, the cuddles, and even the occasional chaos. If I can turn my love of creating into a life where I don't miss a moment with him, that's the masterpiece I'm most proud of.

What does a typical day look like for you as a mom and business owner?
My days begin before the sun rises and often end long after it sets. I wear many hats, including full-time mom, wife, daughter, friend, business owner, and Quality Assurance Custodial Manager for my local school district. I spend my days ensuring schools are clean, safe, and welcoming, while also caring for my family, growing my business, and supporting the people I love.
Some days are exhausting and the responsibilities can feel endless, but every smile from my son, every goal reached, and every life I touch reminds me why I keep going. Behind every role I carry is a heart full of love, determination, and purpose. It may not always be easy, but it's a life I'm grateful to live, one built on service, sacrifice, and unconditional love. My story isn't about having it all. It's about giving my all, every single day.
What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?
The most rewarding part of Doodles by Dez is getting to be a small part of your day. Whether it's a doodle, a donation banner, or bringing a fun idea to life, I love creating things that make people smile. I know times are tough and everything feels expensive, so I always do my best to work with people and find a deal when I can. Doodles by Dez is all about making cute, meaningful creations without breaking the bank. At the end of the day, I just want to create something special for you and add a little happiness to your day.
What challenges have you faced balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship?
One of the biggest challenges at Doodles by Dez is balancing creativity, business growth, and family life while building brand visibility in the community. As a full-time working mom, wife, and entrepreneur, I've learned that success isn't about doing everything at once. It's about focusing on what matters most. Through meaningful community connections, personalized customer experiences, and a passion for creating unique designs, Doodles by Dez continues to grow with the support of those who believe in shopping small and supporting local. Every order, share, and recommendation helps turn creativity into connection and keeps this dream moving forward.
What advice would you give to other moms thinking about starting a business?
Trust yourself more than you think. Love, patience, and showing up each day matter far more than being perfect. Take care of yourself too, because happy, supported moms raise happy, supported kids. You've got this, one day at a time.
How do you like to spend time together as a family?
When I'm not working, I love spending time with my son Axle and getting outside, even if it's just for a few minutes. One of my favorite places to unwind is my in-laws' land in Buffalo, Missouri. They have been some of my biggest supporters throughout this journey, and my father-in-law has even made custom items to help my business along the way. I also believe good food is good for the soul! One of my favorite local spots is Lin's Kitchen in Grain Valley. Their Crab Rangoon is a must-try and always hits the spot. Between family support, fresh air, and great food, I find the balance and motivation to keep pursuing my goals.
